Just a day after the Food and Drug Administration announced that a black box would be required for power morcellators, a large hospital chain bans the procedure. HCA Holdings, Inc., the largest for-profit U.S. hospital operator, has implemented a prohibition on the use of power morcellation in laparoscopic uterine surgeries in its facilities. The impact of this decision affects more than 150 hospitals and more than 100 surgical centers operated by HCA. The surgical technique involves use of a laparoscopic power morcellator device that pulverizes tissue before it is extracted from the uterus through a small opening. Morcellation is the mincing or pulverization of tissue to make it easier to remove.
